In Depth: Vector-borne Diseases (Back to Infectious Diseases Basics Menu)

Infectious diseases can spread with the help of insects and ticks.

Insects and ticks pass some disease-causing microbes on to victims through their bite or poop. The germs rely on these carriers, or vectors, to move them from host to host. Examples of diseases spread by these vector carriers include West Nile virus, Lyme disease, malaria and yellow fever.
