She battles bugs that spread disease
Ticks and mosquitoes can spread a wide range of diseases. When they start biting, Melissa Kemperman, an epidemiologist specializing in vector-borne disease at the Minnesota Department of Health, works with medical clinics and the public on disease prevention, detection and treatment.

When Melissa is not fighting disease, she is collecting mosquitoes and ticks for research. She enjoys her career as an epidemiologist because it combines her interests in public health, ecology, and the natural world. The job gives her a wide variety of things to do, something she finds very attractive.
